The aim of this book is to discuss cleft lip and palate deformities in a comprehensive way, presenting it from the basics to the most clinically and surgically relevant issues. First, the basic concepts of embryology and pathogenesis of the facial deformities will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to the genetics underlying this condition. Following that, basic principles of surgical treatment through the most recent advances in the field will be presented, along with most important evidences from the literature and the personal experience of the editors and authors. 

Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment presents the state of the art and advances in the field and is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide for a broad audience. All the specialties involved in the comprehensive care of these craniofacial deformities will be presented in this book.

Nivaldo Alonso trained in Plastic Surgery at Universidade of São Paulo. At the end of Plastic Surgery residency stayed as chief of the residents for 01 year more. After this went to France for fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery with Daniel Marchac and during this period became observer in Clinique Belvedere with Paul Tessier. Back to Brazil in 1987 decided to follow academic career. He completed Phd on the year 1992 and late  became Associate Professor  in the  Department of Surgery at the University of São Paulo. International Volunteer for Operation Smile since 1997 where treating cleft lip and palate was main proposal. All these years dedicated to craniofacial surgery and working hard to give more visibility to the treatment of congenital deformities was elected to be President of  Brazillian Association of Cranio Maxilofacial Surgery.  He was President for 4 years. In 1993 started the Service of Craniofacial Surgery in Plastic Surgery Department of Hospital das Clinicas at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo. Since then  more than 50 fellows were trained in Craniofacial Surgery. He has more than 250 papers published and  International Recognition. He was invited as Visiting Professor in two important American University, Yale and Harvard. For his huge International surgical activities  in developing countries he was invited to became commissioner on Lancet Commission for Global Surgery,  with close cooperation with Harvard Medical School , Sweeden Lund University and King’s College of Surgery and stay working in this commission until now. He is active member of International Society of Craniofacial Surgery and International  Member of American Society of Plastic Surgery. Now is member of the ASPS Volunteers in Plastic Surgery Steering Committee. He has more than 20 years dedicated to the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients.

Cassio Eduardo Raposo do Amaral < completed his plastic surgery training at University of Campinas under the leadership of Dr. Cassio Raposo do Amaral in 2005. The following year he went to USA to gain additional experience in craniofacial surgery and cleft lip and palate at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery with Drs. Joseph G. McCarthy and Court Cutting. He extended his period in USA in the International fellowship at UCLA under the leadership of Dr Henry K. Kawamoto and James P. Bradley. In 2008 he was a recipient of the ASPS International scholar and returned to USA to visit the well-respect worldwide craniofacial centers. He completed his PhD at University of São Paulo working in the field of bone tissue engineering under the leadership of Dr. Nivaldo Alonso. After his return to SOBRAPAR, a hospital built by his late father Cassio Raposo do Amaral  in 1979 and totally devoted to craniofacial surgery and cleft lip and palate, he organized all protocols and data collection, and restructured  a very busy practice based in congenital craniofacial anomalies. He is a leading plastic and craniofacial surgeon in Brazil and with his brother Cesar Augusto Raposo do Amaral also plastic surgeon consolidated a pilgrimage of congenital patients from all over the country to Campinas, where SOBRAPAR is located.  He has authored more than 100 articles in English and Portuguese literature and 10 book chapters. He is a member of 7 Professional Societies, including the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, Brazilian Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Brazilian Cleft Palate Association, Brazilian Burn Society, International member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery and Active member of the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery and member of the American Cleft Palate Association.  He was a recipient of 13 awards of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and Brazilian Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery.  Currently, Dr. Raposo is the President of the Brazilian Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery.
