About The Author

Park, Sanghoon

This book is a practical and detailed guide on how to perform a range of surgical techniques for facial bone contouring. Based on the clinical experiences gained by the authors while carrying out more than 10,000 facial bone surgeries at their clinical institute in Seoul, Korea, each procedure is meticulously described and illustrated, step by step. Importantly, careful attention is paid to the impact of ethnic differences on surgical technique and goals, drawing on lessons learned during the treatment of patients from approximately 30 countries. Readers will also find instructive accompanying case studies and copious guidance on preoperative patient assessment, potential complications, and complication management. Facial bone contouring surgery has been gaining popularity not only in many Asian countries but also in Western countries, especially those in which there are sizable Asian populations. In enabling readers to learn and master the various techniques of facial bone surgery, and to achieve optimal outcomes in clinical practice, the book will be of immense value to plastic surgeons in both Asia and the West.

Sang-Hoon Park, MD, PhD, is a pioneer in the field of facial bone surgery in Korea and President and Chief of Surgeons at ID Hospital, Seoul, Korea. He began performing facial bone and orthognathic surgery while a faculty member at Asan Medical Center, Seoul. After founding his own private plastic surgery hospital in 2004, he focused increasingly on improving both functional and aesthetic aspects in patients undergoing facial bone surgery. He fabricated and invented the globally renowned “V-line surgery”, which significantly improved patients’ aesthetic satisfaction. To date, he has operated on more than 3,000 mandible and zygoma reduction surgery cases and is recognized for his work far beyond Korea – indeed, worldwide.
Dr. Park has developed a wide array of techniques to improve methods of orthognathic surgery. He has also developed the surgery-first technique, which omits preoperative orthodontic treatment, meaning that patients no longer need to spend 1–2 years suffering from braces prior to surgery. In addition, postsurgical tying of the upper and lower teeth (maxilla and mandible) is no longer necessary, greatly improving and shortening the period of recovery while immensely improving patient comfort.
Dr. Park has made media appearances both globally and domestically, and has authored various articles including in The New York Times and the Washington Post.
